From the cutting edge of tech – Superman Memory Crystals!
This is a whole new kind of digital storage – which stores huge amounts of information and can last for billions of years. Will this be a way that we can store our most precious records and create a legacy for the future?
This nano-structured glass was engineered to store huge amounts of data in five dimensions, which according to the inventors has thermal stability up to 1,000 degrees Celsius, it can last for for 13.8 billion years at 190 degrees Celsius, or virtually forever at room temperature. (So it doesn’t matter whose lounge room it is stored in?) The creators have named them the “Superman memory crystals”. The nano glass material influences the way light passes through the glass layers and an ultrafast laser is used to encode the information in five dimensions.
Professor Peter Kazansky from the Optoelectronics Research Center says “It is thrilling to think that we have created the technology to preserve documents and information and store it in space for future generations. This technology can secure the last evidence of our civilization: all we’ve learned will not be forgotten.
